A 4-day-old Thoroughbred presented with severe flexor tendon laxity of the hind limbs. SoundHorse FoalTraxx shoes were used and modified with an extra extension in the heels, using a ThermoPad glued to the bottom. Wood screws were screwed into the bottom of the heel extension for traction.

The foal was managed with controlled exercise, followed by small paddock turnout. The shoe and the modification provided leverage and support while the tendons and flexor muscles strengthened and developed normally.
The feet were trimmed, and the shoes were reapplied after two weeks. Then, the shoes were removed after the third week. At this time, the foal displayed a much more normal stance and returned to a normal turnout and foot care schedule.
