Preparing Hoof

The hoof is prepared for bonding in much the same way it would be for reconstruction or re-shoeing.

  1. Start with a dry hoof and remove any excess dirt from the hoof using a wire brush.
  2. Sand the walls of the hoof lightly using a sanding block, disk sander or a Dremel tool.
  3. Wrap legs in the Co-Flex to protect the skin from adhesives (see note below on the use of Co-Flex).
  4. If this is the first application of the shoe, take care to make sure the hoof wall is clean & dry.

Co-Flex Wrap on Leg

Co-Flex Wrap on Leg

Note on the use of Co-Flex: The leg wrap helps to protect the leg from adhesives used during hoof reconstruction and/or the application of the Series I & II ™ adhesive-bonded shoes. Co-Flex is a cohesive bandage material similar to a “vet-wrap”. We supply a single roll that is more than adequate to cover both legs. It is helpful to run some additional tape around the coronet over the top of the sleeves — inexpensive black electrical tape works very well.
